About
About this project
This Hoboken brownstone kitchen was functional but lacked personality. The homeowners—passionate home cooks who entertain frequently—wanted a backsplash that would become a conversation piece while complementing their navy custom cabinetry. We sourced handmade Moroccan Zellige tiles in a soft white glaze, each piece slightly irregular for authentic artisan character. Installing them in a classic herringbone pattern required meticulous planning—each tile was hand-cut to ensure the pattern flowed seamlessly from counter to ceiling, wrapping around corners and window frames. The subtle variations in the glazed surface catch light differently throughout the day, creating a living backdrop that transforms the kitchen from a cooking space into a work of art. The project included custom brass trim pieces at transitions and took 2 weeks to complete. The result perfectly balances timeless elegance with modern sophistication.
