About
About this project
The living room of this Montclair Colonial was dominated by an outdated red brick fireplace with a bulky oak mantel. The homeowners envisioned a show-stopping focal point that would anchor their newly renovated open-concept living space. We designed a floor-to-ceiling installation using book-matched Calacatta Viola marble slabs. Book-matching involves cutting sequential slabs and opening them like a book, creating a mirror image that emphasizes the stone's dramatic purple-gray veining. The 10-foot height required precision engineering to ensure the heavy slabs were securely mounted. The minimalist design features a floating mantel shelf integrated into the marble, eliminating the traditional heavy mantel for a contemporary aesthetic. A linear gas insert replaced the wood-burning firebox, providing efficient heat and a clean modern flame. The result transforms the room—what was once an eyesore is now a gallery-worthy installation that draws everyone's attention.
