About
About this project
When a retired surgeon and his wife decided to age in place in their Tenafly home, they refused to sacrifice aesthetics for accessibility. Their existing master bath with a step-in tub and glass shower door presented fall risks, but typical "medical-looking" accessible bathrooms weren't acceptable. We designed a space that's fully ADA-compliant without announcing itself as an accessible bathroom. The curbless walk-in shower features a linear drain that slopes imperceptibly, allowing wheelchair access while appearing like a luxury spa design. Grab bars are integrated into the design—a heated towel bar by the shower, decorative railing near the toilet—providing support without institutional aesthetics. The comfort-height toilet, wall-mounted vanity with knee clearance, and lever-handle faucets all meet accessibility standards while maintaining elegant design. The non-slip large-format porcelain floor tiles provide safety without the clinical look of textured safety flooring. The result proves that accessible design can be beautiful design.
